Gottfried Schwab Memorial
Architekt: Ludwig Habich
Bauphase: 1905 - 1905
The life-size statue of the young man by Ludwig Habich, a founding member of the Darmstadt Artists' Colony, is located in a small semi-circular space in Alexandraweg on the corner of Eugen-Bracht-Weg. The bronze sculpture, with raised arms and upward gaze, is placed on a square base with a bronze relief of the poet Gottfried Schwab attached to the front. Three verses from Schwab's poem “Genius of Song” are engraved on the side of the pedestal. On the back of the plinth is a medallion-like relief carved into the stone.
The semi-circular space is surrounded by a stone bench. The bench is covered with the inscription “Dedicated to the poet Gottfried Schwab”. The side fronts of the bench are decorated with further bronze reliefs. The western side shows a relief of a man on a small sailing boat with his sail billowing in the wind. The corresponding line of Schwab's text says: “Michel, hear the sea breeze whistling“. The eastern side shows a relief of a grazing horse with the inscription “I know a source, radiant“.
