Ernst Riegel

ceramist, artist blacksmith
* 1871 in Münnerstadt
† 1939 in Köln

After his apprenticeship in Kempten and Munich, Ernst Riegel was able to set up his own workshop as a goldsmith. For his work he was awarded the gold medal at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900. In 1906 he was appointed to the Artists' Colony in Darmstadt and was also required to teach at the Grand Ducal Teaching Studio for Applied Art on the Mathildenhöhe. Riegel was able to participate in the exhibitions of the Darmstadt Artists' Colony of 1908 and 1914. Here, not only goldwork was shown, but also small-format models of his figures for the Wächtersbach earthenware factory. From 1913 Riegel also taught at the Kunstgewerbe- und Handwerkerschule in Cologne, where from 1920 he was also in charge of the goldsmith's class for sacred art.
