Villa "In Roses"
Architekt: Joseph Maria Olbrich
Bauphase: - 1901
The Villa “In Roses” was the home of the painter Hans Christiansen (1866-1945), who was appointed to the Darmstadt Artists' Colony by the Grand Duke in 1899. The position of the Villa emphasised the importance of the artist Christiansen. The Villa was built to the west of the stairs leading to the Ernst Ludwig House. Surrounding the Villa “In Roses” was the Ernst Ludwig House and, on the southern side of Alexandraweg, the Small Glückert House. The square, white-painted building had a steep, hipped roof. Christiansen painted the facade himself with bright, bold colors. The colourful facade design was characteristic and set a strong tone in the Darmstadt Artists' Colony. The Villa “In Roses” was severely damaged during the Second World War in 1944, and the ruins were finally demolished in 1958. The Ernst Ludwig fountain was erected on the site in 1959.
